The best movie of 2018, according to the Oscar committee, was shot in the best traditions of several genres at once: on the one hand, the picture is an excellent road movie, and on the other it is a piercing drama about discrimination against blacks in the United States.
The story of a talented pianist who toured the United States in the company of a chatty Italian driver (also a bodyguard) deservedly received 3 Oscars and Golden Globes.
We tried to select 10 films similar to the Green Book, taking not only tapes about racial intolerance, but also just about the friendship of people from different classes. The resulting selection is quite enough to brighten up a few evenings.
10. Malcolm X (1992)
Malcolm X, who was born Little at birth, was a prominent black rights activist in the mid-20th century. His position was not to everyone's liking and he regularly received threats in his address, but did not pay attention to them.
On February 21, 1965, his opponents turned from words to deeds and shot Malcolm before the next speech. The tragic death (21 bullet wounds) and the busy life of this man formed the basis of the film Malcolm Xfilmed by Spike Lee in 1992.
Denzel Washington, who played the main role, perfectly got used to the image, so this drama will not leave anyone indifferent.
9. Do it right (1989)
Drama “Do it right” also shot Spike Lee, but here he also acted as a producer, screenwriter, and even the lead actor.
This is a story about the residents of the Bedford-Stevezant neighborhood in Brooklyn: African-Americans and Puerto Ricans, adjacent to a small handful of whites. Relations between them are rather strained, and the heat, which has been standing for several days, even more increases the degree of mutual hostility.
In 1989, the film participated in the main competitive program of the Cannes Film Festival, and a year later received two nominations for an Oscar and four for a Golden Globe. In 1999, "Do it Right" was placed on the National Register of Films of America.
8. Loving (2016)
The tape is based on real events that have had a great impact on the lives of blacks in the United States. Beginning in 1924, in Virginia, the law forbade people with different skin colors to marry, but Richard Laving and his wife Mildred did not stop it.
The white man and the black woman did not pay attention to the squinting eyes of the neighbors, survived the loss of friends, and the final test was the court, which wanted to sentence them to a real prison term just because they loved each other and wanted to be together.
Starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Nega perfectly conveyed love, and willpower, and the pain that real spouses had to go through Loving.
7. Farm "Mudbound" (2017)
Drama directed by Lee Rees based on novel by writer Hilary Jordan Mudbound and talks about a family who moved to Mississippi. Here they have to face racism (white family), cruelty, meanness and other injustices.
6. Servants (2011)
Movie events "Servant" also unfold in Mississippi, and in the center of the plot is a white girl writing a book on discrimination against blacks. She draws information from the stories of a servant working in her family for many years. All this happens in the 60s amid growing discontent among African Americans and the Kennedy assassination.
The picture, based on the novel of the same name by Katherine Stockett, boasts an impressive cast: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain and, of course, Octavia Spencer. It was she who became the main star of the film, receiving all possible awards for him: Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Sputnik, etc.
For the actress, the tape became a real benefit, raising it to the Hollywood Olympus and multiplying the subsequent fees many times.
5. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Let the release year not bother you: "To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck and Mary Badham - an all-time film. 8 nominations for an Oscar (3 victories) and the title of one of the best works of cinema, he received quite deservedly.
The picture is based on the no less iconic Roman Harper Lee, who received the Pulitzer Prize in 1961.
A lawyer raising two children alone takes up the defense of an African-American who is accused of raping a white woman. To prove his innocence in conditions of acute racial prejudice is not an easy task. But this will help teach children to be fair and evaluate people not by their skin color, but by their actions, because whites often turn out to be much more cruel and ruthless.
4. Marshall (2017)
Plot of the film Marshall partly similar to “To Kill a Mockingbird”: here, too, there is an African-American accused of raping a white woman, only the same black lawyer named Tergood Marshall protects him.
In 1940, the black lawyer was a curiosity, so he was not even allowed to speak in court, appointing a white one. Marshall has to prove the innocence of his client outside the courtroom, while trying to convince everyone of his professionalism.
Interest adds factthat the tape is based on real events, and Tergood Marshall is the first African American in the history of the United States to become the Chief Justice.
3. Another's hatred (2018)
The main character of the film Alien Hate - A 16-year-old African-American schoolgirl living in a poor neighborhood but attending a decent school.
Her measured life comes to an end on the day when she witnesses the murder of her friend by a white policeman. No one except her can shed light on what happened, but if she speaks, then death will threaten her and her family.
Despite the huge risk, the girl decides to do the right thing and tell everything, but will they only believe her when the police officer with a “noble” skin color denies her guilt?
2. 1+1 (2011)
Let's make a reservation right away: we included the original French film in the selection «1+1», and not a Hollywood remake, as it is much more “soulful”. Despite the talents of Brian Cranston and Kevin Hart, Omar C and Francois Clouse better managed to convey friendly feelings between a rich white aristocrat and a poor black servant. Although, you can call a hero a servant with a stretch: this is friendship, albeit strange.
It is difficult to imagine that someone did not watch this film, but just in case we will briefly describe the plot: a rich, but paralyzed man is looking for an assistant who will take care of him around the clock. He prefers educated, educated, but extremely boring candidates to a rude, uncouth and unprepared black guy, who at first glance is not suitable for such a job.
The new assistant has no idea how to care for a disabled person, but he knows the address of a good brothel and where to get a jamb.
1. Hidden figures (2016)
The space race between the USSR and the USA forced the Americans to hire black women in NASA, who were placed in a separate block.
One of them, the brilliant mathematician Katherine Vaughan, gets a chance to work in the main group with white employees, which they did not trust anyone before. Their respect can only be earned by hard work, but even this is not enough. A steel character and a good heart - this is what will help her become a leading analyst of the space program.
Film Hidden Figures became the best in 2016, confidently beating the competition at the Oscars.
